A front door of a family home in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. Approaching the front door of a home as a threshold between climates, we focussed on the aspect of varying light situations inside and outside of the home. The design of the door makes use of an extensive collection of light transmitting materials, compiled in the studio. In this case cast colored acrylics were used that have the capacity of coloring light while obscuring view. The material experiments done for this project consisted of testing the effects of milling and sanding on the way the material colors and transmits light, in order to understand how the production of custom acrylic inserts with a CNC machine in turn influences their respective material properties. In this case the tooling directly affects the functioning of the material, in addition to the geometry of the parts that is needed for a secure fit in the surrounding plate material.
